Our Story
Achieving New York’s ambitious goal of producing 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind by 2035 and achieving 100% clean energy by 2040 with plans to procure more than two-thirds of this goal by 2035, requires significant public and private investment, coordination, detailed planing and parternships. The Queensboro Renewable Express would play a major role in making this energy transformation possible utilizing the expertise, experience and resources of Rise Light & Power.
The Queensboro Renewable Express offers an environmentally responsible, common-sense solution to deliver renewable offshore wind energy to New York City homes and businesses. Rise acquired Ravenswood Generating Facility in Long Island City in Queens New York with plans to redevelop the site as a renewable energy hub serving as a central interconnection point for offshore wind farms to send clean energy to the New York City electric grid.
THE RIGHT SOLUTION
Queensboro Renewable Express is the right solution for the renewables age as it enables offshore wind projects to utilize existing infrastructure affordably and efficiently to continue to power New York City and its communities and businesses as it has for decades.
Powering New York’s Future
ABOUT RISE
For nearly 60 years, the Ravenswood Generating Station has been a vital part of New York’s energy system. Located on 28 waterfront acres in Long Island City, in Queens New York, Ravenswood proudly employs more than 100 union men and women from the greater New York/New Jersey metro region and delivers more than 20 percent of New York City’s generation capacity. It played a major role in re-energizing the grid and turning the lights back on after 2003’s historic Northeast Blackout. Ravenswood has continuously delivered safe and reliable service during major weather events, including Hurricane Sandy – during which it provided up to 50 percent of New York City’s energy – and others, like the recent “Polar Vortex” and “Bomb Cyclone”. The Queensboro Renewable Express will do the same, only cleaner.
In 2017, LS Power acquired Ravenswood and committed to investing in a comprehensive redevelopment of its energy business. Since then, the company has invested more than $160 million to modernize the Station’s facilities and has retired over 300MW of outdated fossil-fired peakers to make space for new clean energy infrastructure.
In 2020, LS Power launched Rise Light & Power as an independent, regional energy asset manager and developer, to own and manage the Ravenswood Generating Station and the former Werner Generating Station in New Jersey. Rise will leverage these assets and resources to develop new, large-scale clean energy infrastructure to power the greater New York- New Jersey metropolitan area.
Today, Rise Light & Power is pursuing an exciting growth-oriented strategy – from modernizing the Ravenswood Generating Station to building the largest battery storage project on the US East Coast. Rise Light & Power is proud to be a wholly-owned, independently-operated subsidiary of LS Power, a development, investment, and operating company focused on the North American power and energy infrastructure sector.
